Is Literacy Resources, Inc. a registered Chicago Public School vendor?

YES! Our CPS Vendor Number is 80014.  We have direct online access to the CPS procurement web site and can download purchase orders as soon as they are approved.

Can I purchase the curriculum with a District Purchase Order?

Yes.  For fastest processing you may fax your purchase order to 708-366-9149.

Can I purchase this curriculum with a credit card?

Can I purchase this curriculum with a personal check?

Yes. You can access an order form here, which can then be mailed along with your payment to LRI.  You may also enter your order online, and will then be prompted to print and mail the order at the end of the process. Illinois orders pre-paid by check must include Illinois sales tax when required or they will not be able to be processed.  See below for sales tax information.

Is sales tax added to book purchases?

We are only required to charge sales tax for orders being shipped within Illinois. Sales tax is not charged, however, if an Illinois Sates Tax Exemption number is provided.  Customers providing a tax exempt number assume all responsibility for proper and correct usage of their organization’s tax exempt status.

How are orders shipped?

All orders shipped within the US and Canada are shipped via UPS ground service, and originate from the Chicago area.  UPS estimates delivery time to be between 1-5 business days for continental US orders, depending on the distance from Chicago.  UPS does not guarantee delivery time for ground service, however.  We always strive to ship orders on the same day if received by 2:00 p.m. CST, or the following business day for orders received after 2:00 p.m.

Can books be shipped outside of the US and Canada?

LRI has recently partnered with Bongo International to fulfill our international orders. Bongo provides our international visitors with a FREE US forwarding address for your online purchases.


LRI will ship your order to the US address provided by Bongo International.  Once Bongo receives your items they then complete the shipping process to you and will provide you with a Tracking Link for your shipment. 

LRI will only charge you for the shipping cost to the US address, and Bongo will charge you for the international shipping.  Because Bongo specializes in international shipping, they are able to negotiate the best possible rates for international shipping and that savings is passed on to you!

Can I pick up my books at the LRI office if I’m I the area?

No.  All orders are shipped directly from our printer and we do not stock the books here in our office.

How do I get a copy of your W9 so I can place an order?

I purchased one book thinking our kindergarten team could share it. I don't want to break the copyright law by copying it...is it permissible to copy lessons to share with a grade-level team.

All of our curriculum is fully copryright protected, and therefore copying any part of the books is a violoation of federal copyright laws.

Is the curriculum aligned to Common Core State Standards?

Yes. The Primary Curriculum (yellow book) is aligned with the first grade Phonological Awareness Standards of the Common Core Standards. Click here for a summary of the first grade alignment.

How does the curriculum fit into the literacy block?

We suggest that phonemic awareness is 10 minutes of the literacy block within the school day. It can be used to complement any reading series. In each lesson students practice letter/sound mastery, onset fluency, blending, segmenting, identifying final and medial sounds, substituting, adding, and deleting phonemes, along with language awareness. The lessons are engaging and fast-paced, and provide students with phonemic awareness skills they need to succeed as readers.

Does the curriculum have to be done as a whole group?

The research is clear that all students can benefit from being taught phonemic awareness skills. Therefore we recommend that the lessons be presented to the entire class as part of the daily literacy block.  The entire lesson or specific skills can then be repeated with small groups or one-on-one for students who remain insecure after the whole group lesson, i.e. Title I groups, Learning Disabilities Resource, etc.

Is there a difference between phonemic awareness skills and phonics skills?

YES! Phonemic awareness skills deal with the spoken language and are mainly auditory skills. Phonics skills deal with the printed and written language and are both auditory and visual. In phonemic awareness, students are being taught to hear and manipulate the sounds of language. In phonics, students are being taught which letters are associated with the sounds of the language. Both skills are crucial to reading mastery! These skills need to be combined, and it is my experience that this is best done during your word study time and not during your phonemic awareness time.

Is word study a part of the program?

Word study and phonics would be a separate piece of the literacy block, but we do want to see a transfer from phonemic awareness to phonics.

Is the program intended for use with Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3 students?

The Phonemic Awareness program written by Dr. Michael Heggerty is a Tier 1 core program for phonemic awareness for PreK, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classrooms. It can be used to provide tier 2 and tier 3 support through small group or individual instruction for students in grades K-8.

Does the curriculum include the letter cards used for the Letter Names & Sounds activity?

No. You can use any pack of cards for this activity, and we recommend that you shuffle the cards so that they are not in alphabetical order. You want the cards to be large enough for the whole class to be able to see at the same time. It is also important that you expose students to all the letters of the alphabet during this activity, so that students can master all the letter names and sounds. Cards should be added for blends, digraphs, and trigraphs as those combinations are introduced in the lessons.  We also recommend that cards be created for letters who appearance varies with different fonts (a, a, g, g).  When you show each letter card, the students respond chorally, as a whole group, saying "The letter is __, the sound is __."  All possible sounds should be included for each given letter.

Where should I start the lessons if implementing during a school year?

It is recommended that teachers using the Kindergarten and primary curriculum use the following format when implementing during the school year:  Week 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, and continue week by week from there.  This provides time to introduce the different skills to the students, and it also provides students with instruction in more difficult skills, such as blending and segmenting words with more than 3 phonemes.

An option that you can implement in order to make up the lessons you are skipping is to add a second phonemic awareness time within your school day, and reduce the number of words for each skill to 5 or 6.

How should a 2nd grade classroom implement the curriculum (yellow book or green book)?

There is not a separate manual for 2nd grade, and there are not Phonological Awareness Standards in the Common Core State Standards for 2nd grade.  We recommend that teachers begin the 2nd grade school year around week 15, and use the curriculum with the whole class for the first 20 weeks of school.  After completing lessons 15-35, the teacher can then use the curriculum as a Tier 2 intervention with students who still need the additional support.

What Professional Development is offered?

We currently offer several professional development sessions, including pre-implementation training on the phonemic awareness curricula, post-implementation classroom observations, and phonics/decoding. A more detailed description of the sessions can be found here.

Is training necessary to successfully implement the curriculum?

No. The curricula were all written to be very user friendly, and many of our customers have successfully implemented the curriculum without a formal training on the process.  However, teachers will certainly benefit from the training, as it includes some theory and research on phonemic awareness as well as the presentation of a sample lesson.
